Between the shopping, the parties, the traveling, and the hosting, the holidays can be just as overwhelming as they are exciting. With what might feel like a bottomless to-do list, many turn to pick-me-ups to help them power through.
Caffeine is one of the most popular pick-me-ups with 85% of Americans reporting consuming caffeine on a daily basis1. As a resource for you or any of your clients falling into that 85% category, here are a few key facts to help inform caffeine decisions:
- Health Authorities around the world have concluded that a moderate daily intake of 400mg of caffeine from all sources is safe for healthy adults in the general population2. This amount varies for pregnant and nursing women, those who are sensitive to caffeine and children.
- Single doses of caffeine up to 200mg are safe for the general healthy adult population, even when consumed less than two hours prior to intense physical exercise under normal environmental conditions.
- Whether caffeine is naturally occurring or synthetic, both are identical in structure and effect.
Individuals should always consider all potential sources of dietary caffeine including foods, dietary supplements and/or medications that may contribute to overall daily caffeine intake, and recognize the importance of a good night's sleep. Caffeine is not a replacement for rest even during the holidays!
