Individualizing Diabetes Care in the Latinx Community, with Joanna Mitri, MD, MS, and Nicole Patience, MS, RD, LDN, CDCES, CEDRD

Tuesday, July 13, 2:00 pm ET
A registered dietitian and physician from Joslin Diabetes Center, the global leader in diabetes research, care and education, team up in this presentation to review the American Diabetes Association Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) guidelines. Diabetes education using the “plate method” is often a simple way to convey nutrition recommendations, particularly if an individual presents with literacy or language barriers. However, with this approach alone goals are not individualized and barriers to change may go unacknowledged. This presentation addresses the unique cultural identity and values of Latinx individuals and their diabetes risk. In addition to the assessment of macronutrient intake, this presentation offers tips to unpack relationship with food and tools to screen for disordered eating. The use of motivational interviewing will help build SMART goals that empower change for Latinx individuals.
