When I visit a hospital, I look at how staff treat patients, the “homeyness” of the rooms, and the use of technology. That’s one of the reasons I was interested in the details surrounding the new Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The facility may feature luxuries such as large, private, sun-filled patient rooms and customized room service, but it also used the nearly 10 years of design and construction leading up to its opening as an opportunity to build into its backbone more advanced health IT in an effort to improve patient care.

New UCLA Center Focuses on HIT
After nearly 10 years of design and construction, the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center (RRUMC) is open for patient care. The new facility—which features luxuries such as 520 large, private patient rooms with sun-filled views and daybeds for family members, wireless Internet access for patients and guests, room service with customized meals, gardens, and outdoor play areas for pediatric patients—has technology deeply woven into its DNA, creating efficient ways to fight disease and track information and patient progress.

These GPS-like devices serve many useful functions inside healthcare facilities, but privacy advocates worry that there are other consequences that are far less appealing.
High-Tech Texas Hospitals See Fewer Complications, Lower Costs
Texas hospitals using HIT had fewer complications, lower mortality rates, and lower costs, a University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center researcher has found.
The study, published recently in the Archives of Internal Medicine, measured automation in urban hospitals using a clinical information technology assessment tool. The tool, administered to physicians who provide inpatient care, assesses the degree to which clinical information processes in the hospital are computerized.
