Thank God for Dr. Birnbaum. He sites a host of other doctors as the heroes behind these efforts; however, without Steve Birnbaum, these good folks would be disconnected, silent voices.

Comment on The Baucus Bill: A First Look at Its Effect on Imaging by Diana Nole

Thanks, Jim, for breaking down the bill and focusing on how it will affect diagnostic imaging. I’ve been working with the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance to support healthcare reform and the efforts underway to make care more accessible and affordable.

To achieve this, the Baucus Committee must remain on a hunt to “find the waste.” Utilization rates and self-referrals are certainly part of the discussion and should be looked at closely by all stakeholders. But it must be a balancing act. Cuts to reimbursement cannot negatively impact the growth of imaging jobs, industry innovation and patient access to care. If the Committee approaches each piece of the bill from this viewpoint, patients, providers and insurers could see a more efficient healthcare environment.

One area of the bill that I have concerns about, that you may cover in a future post, is the proposed medical device fee. Obviously, as an imaging vendor this hits me very close to home. But I worry that loading a hefty device fee ($40 billion over 10 years) on top of proposed changes to reimbursement would not help healthcare reform achieve its goals. It would stifle research and innovation in the industry, leading to diminished patient access and reduced job growth.

I’m hoping you’ll be covering this element of the bill in a future post. I’d be really interested in your thoughts.

That's interesting. Now that you mention it, there would be a certain consistency in conservatives defending the Seventh Amendment as zealously as they do the Second Amendment.

Actually, more and more conservatives are beginning to speak out against so-called medical malpractice "reform." Why? Because it's decidedly anti-conservative. You can read more about it at http://tinyurl.com/qbc62m
