Domestic violence affects every member of a family or couple—women and children, as well as the batterers—most often men—who are incarcerated for their abusive actions. Many programs exist to help the victims of domestic violence, but how do we address the perpetrators, beyond punishment by incarceration, to get to the root of their abusive behaviors?
Batterer intervention programs are an integral part of any comprehensive approach to domestic violence. They work with batterers to help them identify and take responsibility for their abusive behaviors and recognize the effects these behaviors have on intimate partners and children. Research tells us that these programs can help batterers make positive change.
This month’s E-News Exclusive gives us an inside look into a batterer intervention program from the perspective of a group facilitator. Read about the structure of a program and one of the models on which it’s based and see the transformation of some of the abusers as seen through the eyes of a social worker.

Facilitating a Batterer Intervention Program
By Gilda Seelke, MSW, LCSW
The average group in the batterer intervention program in which I work consists of about 15 to 20 men ranging between the ages of 18 and 60 and includes diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Most of the men are on probation for domestic violence and/or sexual assault charges. The men are seated in concentric circles while the facilitator sits in the inner circle, encouraging them to offer each other feedback and ultimately confront their peers about abusive and/or controlling behavior. The group is well structured, based on cognitive behavioral theory, and takes feminist theory into consideration.
