Editor’s E-Note

Springer PublishingIf you’ve ever been discouraged professionally or personally by naysayers who doubt your ability or commitment to achieve what seems like a Herculean task, please read this month’s E-News Exclusive. Written by a medical social worker, educator, writer, local radio talk show host, and parent of 13 children (11 adopted and two birthed), it will engage and hopefully inspire you to scale obstacles and keep moving toward your goals. It will also help you return to the foundations of social work by revisiting the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics and applying it to real-world professional challenges that many social workers encounter every day.

Don’t toss this one away. It might be one piece you will want to reread at those times of skepticism and uncertainty about your value as a social work professional and as a person. Enjoy!

You Can’t Do That!
By Roberta Gastineau, LCSW

When I was a kid, it was better to throw yourself out of a second-story window than to do anything that made you different from everyone else in the neighborhood. If you had fallen out of the window, the news would have spread up and down the street, and everyone would have rushed to your aid and encouraged you in your recovery. Tell someone you wanted to be an actress, go to college, or play the piano and that news would have spread through the neighborhood, too. However, the response would have been much different: “Oh, here comes Elizabeth Taylor. Can I have your autograph?”, “Well if it isn’t the college girl. Say something smart why doncha?”, or “Who do you think you are? You can’t do that!”

Around my neighborhood, it was a well-known fact that I loved to sing. Kids constantly made fun of me and called me “Doris Day.” You can imagine how another girl in our neighborhood suffered because she dared to be born beautiful. You would have thought she did it on purpose just to annoy the neighbors.
